The invention provides a medical imaging system, in particular for multispectral imaging, and a method for operating such an imaging system. The imaging system (100) comprises: a light source (110), which is designed to irradiate an object (10) with light of different wavelengths, according to a current wavelength spectrum of a plurality of possible wavelength spectra of the light source (110), wherein the light source (110) is assigned an individual identification code, IIC, a first memory (111), which is designed to store the individual identification code, IIC, of the light source (110), a second memory (112), which is designed to store spectrum information concerning possible wavelength spectra of the light source (110), a camera (130), which is designed to generate image data of the object (10) with light reflected or emitted from the object (10), based on the light according to the current wavelength spectrum, a controller (140), which is designed to adapt the generation of image data by the camera (130) using the individual identification code, IIC, of the light source (110) and the spectrum information.
