Abstract
Systems and methods included herein provide ways of ensuring that a media content item is provided at or before a time point which the media content item is due to start. In some embodiments, a device displaying a media content item may determine that one or more portions of the media content item are available in another video quality but may not be buffered before a time point in which presentation of the media content item is due to start. As such, in some embodiments, a device may identify at least one application consuming resources which are not associated with buffering the media content item and reduce the number of resources allocated to the identified at least one application.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- determining that one or more portions of a media content item are being received, by way of a media application executing at least in part at a client device, at a first video quality;
- determining that the one or more portions of the media content item are available to be received at a second video quality different from the first video quality;
- requesting the one or more portions of the media content item at the second video quality;
- predicting, based on one or more resources available to the client device, that that at least one portion of the one or more portions of the media content item requested at the second video quality will not be buffered prior to a time point at which presentation of the at least one portion of the media content item is due to start;
- identifying at least one application which is consuming a portion of the one or more resources available to the client device, wherein the identified at least one application is distinct from the media application and is executing at least in part on the client device, and wherein the identified at least one application is not associated with the buffering of the at least one portion of the media content item;
- and
- reducing the portion of the one or more resources being consumed by the identified at least one application, to enable the at least one portion of the media content item to buffered at the second video quality prior to the time point.
A system comprising control circuitry configured to:
- determine that one or more portions of a media content item are being received, by way of a media application executing at least in part at a client device, at a first video quality;
- determine that the one or more portions of the media content item are available to be received at a second video quality different from the first video quality;
- request the one or more portions of the media content item at the second video quality;
- predict, based on one or more resources available to the client device, that that at least one portion of the one or more portions of the media content item requested at the second video quality will not be buffered prior to a time point at which presentation of the at least one portion of the media content item is due to start;
- identify at least one application which is consuming a portion of the one or more resources available to the client device, wherein the identified at least one application is distinct from the media application and is executing at least in part on the client device, and wherein the identified at least one application is not associated with the buffering of the at least one portion of the media content item;
- and
- reduce the portion of the one or more resources being consumed by the identified at least one application, to enable the at least one portion of the media content item to buffered at the second video quality prior to the time point.
