Method and Apparatus for Maintaining a Resilient VPN Connection

A virtual private network client apparatus comprising:

• a non-transitory computer-readable medium;
• and
• a processor configured to execute instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium to:
• route, via a previously established virtual private network connection to a virtual private network service provider system, packets from the virtual private network client apparatus to a target device outside the virtual private network service provider system, wherein:
• the previously established virtual private network connection includes:
• a limited command exchange channel between the virtual private network client apparatus and an administrative server of the virtual private network service provider system;
• and
• a data channel between the virtual private network client apparatus and a data server of the virtual private network service provider system;
• and
• the processor executes the instructions to route the packets via the data channel.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

• routing, by a virtual private network client device, via a previously established virtual private network connection to a virtual private network service provider system, packets from the virtual private network client device to a target device outside the virtual private network service provider system, wherein:
• the previously established virtual private network connection includes:
• a limited command exchange channel between the virtual private network client device and an administrative server of the virtual private network service provider system;
• and
• a data channel between the virtual private network client device and a data server of the virtual private network service provider system;
• and
• the routing includes routing the packets via the data channel.
