Abstract
Devices, systems, and methods that identify and mark traffic intended to pass through a network with low latency relative to other traffic through the network. The devices, systems, and methods may include a first low latency DOCSIS (LLD) agent that identifies characteristics of low latency packets and/or a second LLD agent that uses the characteristics to identify low latency traffic and mark it for low latency treatment in the network.
Claims10
In combination with a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) conforming to the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), a low latency DOCSIS (LLD) agent causing the CMTS to propagate packets of low latency traffic faster than packets of traffic that is not low latency, based on a feedback loop between the second LLD agent and the CMTS where the CMTS sends the LLD agent a feedback message used by the LLD agent to identify and mark subsequent packets sent to the CMTS as eligible for LLD service, the message based on initial packets identified by the CMTS as being eligible for LLD service.
A head end in a communications network conforming to the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), the head end comprising:
- a router that forwards packets to a CMTS;
- an LLD agent communicatively coupled to the router and to the CMTS;
- wherein
- the CMTS is configured to analyze traffic sent to it from the router, to determine eligibility of packets in the traffic for LLD service, and to selectively cause the router and the LLD agent to mark subsequent packets of traffic eligible for LLD service in a manner that causes the communications network to deliver the subsequent packets through the network faster than packets not eligible for low latency service.
