Abstract
Methods and systems for tracking utilization of a resource of an optical transport network by established end-to-end connections include configuring a network element to obtain one or more utilization metrics for utilization of the resource by one or more input data streams, and transmitting the utilization metrics to at least one of a network management system (NMS) of the optical network or another network element. In some implementations, the methods and systems may include performing resource usage measurements. In some implementations, the utilization metrics may be transmitted to another network element in overheads of digital containers encapsulating the one or more input data streams.
Claims20
A method for an optical network, the method comprising:
- receiving, by a first network element (NE) of the optical network, at least one input data stream;
- obtaining, by the first NE, at least one first utilization metric for utilization of a resource by the at least one input data stream;
- transmitting an output data stream from the first NE to a second NE of the optical network over an optical channel, the output data stream comprising the at least one input data stream;
- and
- transmitting, from the first NE, the at least one first utilization metric to at least one of a network management system (NMS) of the optical network or the second NE.
A system, comprising:
- a first network element (NE) of an optical network, the first NE comprising:
- a first interface configured to receive at least one input data stream;
- a second interface configured to transmit an output data stream over an optical channel, the output data stream comprising the at least one input data stream;
- and
- digital hardware configured to obtain at least one first utilization metric for utilization of a resource by the at least one input data stream;
- and
- wherein the first NE is further configured to transmit the at least one first utilization metric to at least one of a network management system (NMS) of the optical network or a second NE of the optical network.
An optical network comprising:
- a plurality of network elements (NEs) interconnected by optical fiber links;
- and,
- a network management system (NMS) configured to communicate with the plurality of NEs over a data communication network (DCN);
- wherein at least some of the plurality of NEs are configured to perform measurements of a NE resource to estimate utilization of the NE resource by input data streams being received and/or transmitted by said NEs to provide an end-to-end connection in the optical network to support a service, and to generate corresponding utilization metrics;
- and wherein the NMS is configured to use the utilization metrics generated by the at least some of the plurality of NEs to estimate an end-to-end utilization of a network resource by the service.
