Natural response time for domains to assume their natural relaxed state is accelerated by forcing the domains to assume the natural state using hydraulic knock. The hydraulic knock may be implemented by causing VDC material flow within the VDC plate. Flow can be achieved by forming inlet ports and outlet ports in the VDC plate, and controlling VDC fluid flow into the inlet port using an inlet valve and fluid flow out of the outlet port using an outlet valve. Pressure differential is maintained upstream of the inlet valve and downstream of the outlet valve. By controlling the opening duration and amount of the inlet and outlet valve, flow of VDC material within the VDC plate can be induced. This flow is believed to knock the domains out of alignment to thereby accelerate the relaxation time of the domains.
