Methods of making solid-state battery cells using a sacrificial or conductive via, and related solid-state battery cells, are disclosed. One method includes forming a patterned anode current collector (ACC) layer on a solid-state electrolyte, forming a sacrificial material in a first pattern on the patterned ACC layer, depositing an encapsulant on the sacrificial material and the patterned ACC layer, and irradiating the sacrificial material with a laser sufficiently to ablate the sacrificial material and form openings in the encapsulant exposing each ACC in the patterned ACC layer. The solid-state electrolyte is on a cathode layer, which is in turn on a substrate. The openings in the encapsulant form a pattern substantially corresponding to the first pattern. An alternative method substitutes a non-sacrificial conductive via for the sacrificial material, forming the conductive via in an opening in the encapsulant, or exposing the conductive via through the encapsulant.
