Abstract
An air stable solid garnet composition, comprising: a bulk composition and a surface protonated composition on at least a portion of the bulk composition as defined herein, and the protonated surface composition is present on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the bulk composition at a thickness of from 0.1 to 10,000 nm. Also disclosed is a composite electrolyte structure, and methods of making and using the composition and the composite electrolyte structure.
Claims20
A method of making a solid garnet electrolyte membrane for use in an energy storage device, the method comprising:
- contacting opposite faces of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane with a protic acid, the contacting transforms a garnet electrolyte of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane from a lithium-containing garnet into a protonated garnet surface composition at the opposite faces while a bulk of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane comprises a bulk solid garnet composition,
- wherein the bulk solid garnet composition comprises a first lithium garnet chosen from Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and doped LLZO compositions.
