Abstract

An automated electronic security system that includes a digital security seal. The security seal may be coupled to a trailer, shipping container, or individual item. The security seal optionally communicates with a master control circuit in a trailer to notify a remote monitoring service when a seal is tampered with. The seal may communicate with a master control circuit via a trailer wiring system using an optional adapter to provide timely status updates. The real-time status of the seal may be monitored by the master control circuit. When the seal is damaged or broken, an alert may be sent to the monitoring service, which is optionally configured to send a notification to a remote monitoring service. The remote monitoring service optionally applies geographical boundary data and/or triggering rules to determine when an alert should be sent based on geographical locations.

Dependent claims

A security seal for a trailer door, comprising:

an electrically conductive security cable;
first and second connection terminal mounted to the security cable;
a resistor electrically connected in series with the cable between the first and second terminals;
wherein the first and second connection terminals are arranged and configured to electrically connect to corresponding first and second analog input connectors of an adapter that further includes:
a third connector having at least four metal pins adapted for receiving both electrical power and digital electrical signals;
and
a control circuit electrically connected to the at least four terminals, and to the first and second analog input terminals, wherein the control circuit is operable to monitor the electrical continuity of the electrically conductive security cable electrically connected to the first and second input terminals.

A trailer security system, comprising:

a security seal including a cable and a first and second connector electrically connected to the cable;
an adapter that includes:
first and second input connectors electrically connected to the first and second connectors of the security seal;
a third connector having at least four metal pins adapted for receiving both electrical power and digital electrical signals, the third connector electrically connected to the trailer;
and
an adapter control circuit electrically connected to the at least four metal pins, and to the first and second analog input terminals, wherein the adapter control circuit is operable to monitor the electrical continuity of the security cable via the first and second input terminals;
a remote monitoring system executing on one or more processors of one or more computers;
a master control circuit in the trailer, wherein the master control circuit is in communication with the adapter control circuit in the adapter, and with the remote monitoring system via one or more communication links;
wherein the adapter control circuit is configured to send status updates to the master control circuit indicating the state of the security seal;
wherein the master control circuit is configured to accept the status updates and to generate a security update and send it to the remote monitoring service via a communication link with the remote monitoring service;
wherein the remote monitoring system is configured to receive security updates from the master control circuit and to send an alert message to a personal computing device when the security update indicates the security seal has been broken.
