Disclosed are techniques for adaptive RFID tag read operation in which the RFID reader adjusts the message length in response to channel conditions or operating conditions associated with RFID communications. In an aspect, a method of RFID communication performed by an RFID reader includes determining a channel condition or operating condition associated with RFID communication, determining an RFID message length based on the channel condition or operating condition, configuring an RFID tag to use the RFID message length during RFID communication with the RFID reader, and performing an RFID communication with the RFID tag, the RFID communication using the RFID message length.
