A cryptographic function is selected from a plurality of cryptographic functions based on the extracted cryptographic function identifier. A second digest value is generated by processing, using the selected cryptographic function, a candidate value selected from a dictionary list. The second digest value is compared to the first digest value. When the second digest value matches the first digest value, a password associated with the password record is determined to be weak. When the second digest value does not match the first digest value, additional digest values corresponding to additional dictionary values are generated and compared to the first digest value. The password is determined not to be weak when no generated digest value corresponding to the dictionary list matches the first digest value.
