Systems and methods are disclosed for improving garbage collection efficiency through adaptive grouping of data blocks. A storage system controller determines a group size for batching data blocks based on one or more garbage collection performance parameters, such as data block occupancy and historical eviction patterns. The storage system controller groups data blocks according to corresponding lifespans, which may be derived from data block age, and assigns the data blocks to groups having defined lifespan ranges. Groups of data blocks are then selectively chosen for garbage collection. The group size may be dynamically adjusted based on observed garbage collection behavior to optimize system performance.
