The embodiments described herein are directed to systems and methods that use agentic artificial intelligence for interactive and incremental software development. An agentic code generating system receives a natural language description of at least one task, purpose, or function of a target software. The system obtains initial code for the target software and output cumulative modifications to the initial code that correspond to a plurality of intermediate states of development toward final code for the target software by using one or more trained machine learning models. At a subset of the intermediate states, the system obtains interactions with a cumulative modification corresponding to the intermediate state and generate subsequent cumulative modifications based on a revised intermediate state. Final code for the target software is outputted and the trained machine learning models are updated based on the final code and the interactions obtained with the cumulative modifications.
