Abstract
A request to migrate data from a first storage tier to a second storage tier is received. Storage resources storing the data in the first storage tier are identified. A migration operation is executed by a storage system controller to transfer the data from the first storage tier to the second storage tier using the storage resources while avoiding transmitting the data to the storage system controller.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving a request to migrate data from a first storage tier to a second storage tier;
- identifying storage resources storing the data in the first storage tier;
- and
- executing, by a storage system controller, a migration operation that transfers the data from the first storage tier to the second storage tier using the storage resources while avoiding transmitting the data to the storage system controller.
A storage system comprising:
- a plurality of storage devices;
- and
- a storage system controller, operatively coupled to the plurality of storage devices, configured to:
- receive a request to migrate data from a first storage tier to a second storage tier;
- identify storage resources storing the data in the first storage tier;
- and
- execute a migration operation that transfers the data from the first storage tier to the second storage tier using the storage resources while avoiding transmitting the data to the storage system controller.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause a storage system controller to:
- receive a request to migrate data from a first storage tier to a second storage tier;
- identify storage resources storing the data in the first storage tier;
- and
- execute a migration operation that transfers the data from the first storage tier to the second storage tier using the storage resources while avoiding transmitting the data to the storage system controller.
