This disclosure describes determining a measurement strategy for a coordinate measuring machine based on rule evaluation. A measurement rule set includes rules, each with one or more test criteria used to assess whether a rule applies to a test element associated with a geometric feature of a measurement object. A test element is determined and automatically evaluated against at least one rule to identify an applicable rule. When an applicable rule is found, a measurement strategy is generated by adding the rule to a new strategy or by modifying a rule in an existing strategy for the test element. When no rule applies, a new rule is derived from the rule set and added to a new strategy, the new rule defining parameters for measuring the test element. The coordinate measuring machine is then controlled to measure the object using the generated strategy.
