Abstract
Improved optical comb generation from an integrated photonic device is obtained by intracavity optical modulation of a photonic integrated circuit optical parametric oscillator. The resulting device is referred to an FM-OPO. The comb spectrum from an FM-OPO is much broader than obtained from conventional integrated comb generators relying on the electro-optic or Kerr effects. There is also no mode-locking or pulse formation in an FM-OPO. Mid-IR spectroscopy is one of the most promising applications of FM-OPOs.
Claims13
Apparatus comprising:
- a substrate;
- a first optical parametric oscillator (OPO) monolithically integrated on the substrate and including a first waveguide resonator;
- wherein the first waveguide resonator includes a first material having a second order optical nonlinearity;
- wherein the first waveguide resonator includes an intracavity phase modulator;
- wherein providing first pump radiation to the first optical parametric oscillator and providing a first RF signal to the first intracavity phase modulator leads to emission of at least a first optical frequency comb.
