Abstract
An optical interface includes a plurality of inner cores of waveguides, an array of turning elements, wherein each inner core the plurality of inner cores is associated with a respective turning element of the array of turning elements, and a plurality of spot size converters, wherein each spot size converter of the plurality of spot size converters is associated with a respective turning element of the array of turning elements.
Claims20
An optical connector comprising:
- a first body comprising a plurality of holes;
- a plurality of optical cores inserted into the plurality of holes and arranged in a first two-dimensional (2D) array;
- and
- an optically transparent second body bonded to at least one of the first body or the plurality of optical cores, wherein the second body comprises a first plurality of microlenses, each microlens of the first plurality of microlenses aligned with a respective optical core of the plurality of optical cores such that the first plurality of microlenses are arranged in a second 2D array, wherein a first arrangement of the first 2D array matches a second arrangement of the second 2D array.

A system comprising:
- a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprising an optical port;
- an optical connector comprising:
- a first body comprising a plurality of holes;
- a plurality of optical cores inserted into the plurality of holes and arranged in a first two-dimensional (2D) array;
- and
- an optically transparent second body bonded to at least one of the first body or the plurality of optical cores, wherein the second body comprises a first plurality of microlenses, each microlens of the first plurality of microlenses aligned with a respective optical core of the plurality of optical cores such that the first plurality of microlenses are arranged in a second 2D array, wherein a first arrangement of the first 2D array matches a second arrangement of the second 2D array.
3 more elements
A method comprising:
- bonding an optically transparent body to a plurality of optical cores arranged in a two-dimensional (2D) array;
- identifying a center of each optical core of the plurality of optical cores;
- and
- fabricating a plurality of microlenses on the optically transparent body, wherein a center of each microlens is located based on a center of a respective optical core of the plurality of optical cores.
