A clamshell device for surrounding and protecting an optical fiber splice and the bare optical fiber going in and out of the splice. The clamshell device can include jacketing gripping features on each end to secure the clamshell to protective jacketing on either side of the splice. The clamshell may be assembled by mating two identical half pieces around the splice, with one of the half pieces rotated 180 degrees axially with respect to the optical fiber axis and 180 degrees radially about the optical fiber so that mating slots and tabs engage to form the clamshell. Once assembled around the splice, the entire clamshell may be over molded for further protection.
