Abstract
The present specification provides a detector for an X-ray imaging system. The detector includes at least one high resolution layer having high resolution wavelength-shifting optical fibers, each fiber occupying a distinct region of the detector, at least one low resolution layer with low resolution regions, and a single segmented multi-channel photo-multiplier tube for coupling signals obtained from the high resolution fibers and the low resolution regions.
Claims21
A detector configured to detect X-ray radiation, wherein the detector is at least partially within a housing and comprises:
- a first amount of a first scintillator positioned in the housing;
- a first layer comprising a first fiber positioned in, and extending through, the first layer, wherein the first fiber is optically coupled to the first amount of the first scintillator and configured to receive first light rays having a first wavelength range from the first amount of scintillator and shift the first wavelength range of the received first light rays to generate first wavelength-shifted light rays indicative of an amount of low-energy radiation;
- a second amount of a second scintillator positioned in the housing;
- a second layer comprising a second fiber positioned in, and extending through, the second layer, wherein the second fiber is configured to receive second light rays having a second wavelength range and shift the second wavelength range of the second light rays to generate second wavelength-shifted light rays indicative of an amount of high-energy radiation, wherein the first scintillator and the second scintillator are made of at least one of lanthanide-doped barium mixed halides, plastic scintillator materials, or lithium fluoride/zinc sulfide scintillator compositions and wherein the first scintillator and the second scintillator comprise different compositions;
- a first photodetector configured to be optically coupled to the first fiber in order to receive and detect the first wavelength-shifted light rays;
- a second photodetector configured to be optically coupled to the second fiber in order to receive and detect the second wavelength-shifted light rays, wherein the detector has a broad-area planar geometry defining a detector area and a detector thickness measured in a direction of incident X-ray propagation.
