Disclosed herein is a method of identifying and treating a subject having autoimmune encephalitis (AE). The method includes steps of (1) detecting an autoantibody against a neuronal antigen in a biological sample obtained from the subject, in which the neuronal antigen may be N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazoleproprionic acid receptor (AMPAR), gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAR), contactin-associated protein-like 2 (Caspr2), leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 (LGI1), or dipeptidyl-peptidase-like protein 6 (DPPX); and (2) treating the subject by administering solumedrol or immunoglobulin (Ig) to the subject to ameliorate symptoms associated with AE.
