An apparatus for measuring plant leaf water content includes a clamp having opposing jaws configured to secure a leaf. A sensing unit on a first jaw measures a temperature of the leaf and an electrical property of the leaf. A heating unit on a second jaw applies controlled heat to the leaf. A control unit regulates power to the heating unit, receives data indicative of a temperature response and the electrical property, and determines a water-content value for the leaf based on the data. In some embodiments, a capacitance sensor is coupled to the leaf and is interrogated to obtain the electrical property independent of the heating unit. The apparatus may be operated as a standalone clip or may be mounted to an end effector of an articulating arm of a mobile robotic platform to obtain measurements from multiple plants, and may include environmental sensing, geotagging, and wireless communication.
