Abstract
A method for estimating vehicle mass includes obtaining or determining a longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle, determining a total force as a function of a wheel force, an aerodynamic force determined as a function of a surface area of part of the vehicle, a rolling resistance force, and a force of gravity; providing a regression formula including the total force and longitudinal acceleration and using a Kalman filter to solve the regression formula and determine an estimated vehicle mass. The estimated vehicle mass can be used in various vehicle control systems to improve vehicle control dynamics.
