## Abstract

A rifle having a straight pull bolt assembly with a bolt handle that extends outward and downward from a bolt operation mechanism. The bolt handle rotatable a limited rotational range forward and rearwardly about a horizontal axis for operating the mechanism. The handle can be reconfigured to position its rotational range about the horizontal axis and can be attached to the mechanism at either left or right sides to provide for ambidextrous operation. Bolt heads, lower frame members with magazine wells, and barrel assemblies can be readily swapped to change ammunition. The bolt assembly can be unlocked by firing or by a thumb push button release at the backside of the mechanism. A bolt removal release mechanism is forward of the thumb pushbutton and an ejector includes a spring bias and cam follower surface to reliably eject casings.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A straight pull bolt action rifle comprising:
a receiver;
a barrel assembly extending from the receiver;
a bolt assembly removably contained within the receiver, the bolt assembly comprising:
a bolt operation mechanism having a rotatable drive member with an axis of rotation transverse to a longitudinal axis of the straight pull bolt action rifle;
a bolt handle selectively attachable to the rotatable drive member at either a first lateral side or a second lateral side of the straight pull bolt action rifle opposite the first lateral side; and
a bolt body extending forwardly from the bolt operation mechanism,
wherein rotation of the bolt handle effects locking and unlocking of the bolt assembly with respect to the barrel assembly without rotation of the bolt body about the longitudinal axis.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt operation mechanism comprises a plurality of linkage systems actuated by rotation of the rotatable drive member, the plurality of linkage systems configured to provide locking of a bolt head in an in-battery position, unlocking of the bolt head from the in-battery position, and pushing off the bolt assembly from the receiver to initiate an extraction cycle.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 2, wherein a first linkage system of the plurality of linkage systems comprises a sliding toggle mechanism having an over-center position corresponding to the bolt head being locked in the in-battery position, the sliding toggle mechanism comprising a link pivotally connected to the rotatable drive member and pivotally connected to a bolt plunger configured to extend locking elements of the bolt head.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 2, wherein a second linkage system of the plurality of linkage systems comprises a catch link engageable with a catch surface on the receiver, the second linkage system configured to gradually push the bolt assembly away from the receiver upon rotation of the bolt handle from a forward position toward a rearward position.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt handle comprises a shaft portion having splines that engage with cooperating splines in the rotatable drive member, the bolt handle being angularly adjustable relative to the rotatable drive member at a plurality of discrete angular positions.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt handle is attachable to and removable from the rotatable drive member without tools.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt assembly further comprises a bolt head at a forward end of the bolt body, the bolt head having a plurality of extendable roller balls spaced around a circumference of the bolt head for locking the bolt head to the barrel assembly.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt operation mechanism further comprises a firing pin spring, and wherein rotation of the bolt handle from a forward position toward a rearward position compresses the firing pin spring.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The straight pull bolt action rifle of claim 1, wherein the bolt handle is rotatable through an angular range of 30 to 90 degrees between a forward rotational position and a rearward rotational position.

### Claim 10

A modular rifle system comprising:
a receiver;
a first barrel assembly removably secured to the receiver, the first barrel assembly configured for a first ammunition caliber;
a bolt assembly comprising:
a bolt body with an open front end;
a first bolt head removably secured to the bolt body, the first bolt head configured for the first ammunition caliber and having a plurality of extendable roller balls spaced around a circumference of the first bolt head for locking the first bolt head to the first barrel assembly; and
a latch on the bolt body configured to secure the first bolt head to the bolt body,
wherein the first barrel assembly is replaceable with a second barrel assembly configured for a second ammunition caliber different from the first ammunition caliber, and
wherein the first bolt head is replaceable with a second bolt head configured for the second ammunition caliber.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The modular rifle system of claim 10, wherein the latch comprises a lever having a projection that engages with the first bolt head to preclude rotation of the first bolt head when the latch is in a secured position, and wherein depression of the lever disengages the projection to permit removal of the first bolt head from the bolt body.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The modular rifle system of claim 10, wherein the first bolt head connects with the bolt body by axial insertion and partial rotation, and wherein the latch secures the first bolt head against rotation to a removal position.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The modular rifle system of claim 10, wherein the receiver comprises a forward clamping portion having a longitudinal slit defining a C-shape, the forward clamping portion configured to clamp about a barrel extension of the first barrel assembly.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The modular rifle system of claim 13, wherein the first barrel assembly comprises a barrel lug having a rib that interfaces with a corresponding groove on a forward face of the receiver to establish a rotational position and axial location of the first barrel assembly relative to the receiver.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The modular rifle system of claim 10, wherein the bolt assembly further comprises a bolt plunger having a tapered tip configured to extend the plurality of extendable roller balls outwardly for locking the first bolt head in the first barrel assembly.
