A Hydrocarbon-Functionalized Aluminum Fin Lattice for Controlled Thermal Flux Distribution is configured as a thermal intermediary within a stacked cooling assembly of a compact temperature-controlled system. The fin plate comprises an aluminum base structure having a plurality of fins extending from a first surface to increase effective thermal interaction area, a generally planar mounting surface formed on an opposing second surface, and a surface-anchored hydrocarbon layer disposed on at least a portion of the aluminum base structure. The fin plate is positioned on a payload-facing side of a solid-state cooling chip and between the solid-state cooling chip and a payload chamber, such that the fin plate transmits cooling from the solid-state cooling chip toward the payload chamber during active cooling operation and absorbs and redistributes heat within the system during reduced or interrupted active cooling, thereby operating as a bidirectional thermal intermediary rather than as a standalone heat sink.
