The present invention is a “Cluster WSHP” system for rapid upgrade or installation of large built-up air handling units (AHUs) as heat pumps using multiple common and in distribution (i.e., “commodity”), smaller unitary or split water source heat pumps (WSHPs), typically with a Cluster Controller to simplify the controls by making the Cluster WSHP appear as one unit to a BMS. This Cluster WSHP enables low cost yet high efficiency change-outs or new installations with far more coil per volume of airflow than large commercial AHUs have today. The small commodity WSHP units used are those commonly used for decarbonizing buildings due to their high efficiency. This innovation will enable easier and very cost effective decarbonization of buildings. It will also transform large HVAC unit servicing into a task no more complex than servicing a typical residential heat pump.
An apparatus for enabling the use of multiple smaller and commonly available water source heat pump (WSHP) units (the multiple smaller WSHP units) from multiple manufacturers as a Cluster WSHP in lieu of the typical built-up HVAC air handling units (AHUs) found in large commercial buildings, where
