Cryogenic cooling system and an insert therefor

A cryogenic cooling system comprising:

• a cryostat comprising:
• a primary insert comprising:
• a plurality of primary plates, each primary plate having a primary contact surface;
• a pulse tube refrigerator thermally coupled to one or more primary plates of the plurality ofprimary plates;
• and
• one or more primary connecting members arranged so as to connect the plurality of primary plates;
• and
• a demountable secondary insert comprising:
• a plurality of secondary plates, each secondary plate having a secondary contact surface;
• and
• a dilution unit thermally coupled to one or more of the secondary plates;
• wherein the cryogenic cooling system is configured such that, when the secondary insert is mounted to the primary insert, one or more of the primary plates are thermally conductively coupled to the dilution unit;
• and
• wherein the secondary insert is removable from the primary insert.

A cryogenic cooling system comprising:

• a cryostat comprising:
• a primary insert comprising:
• a plurality of primary plates, each primary plate having a primary contact surface;
• and
• one or more primary connecting members arranged to connect the plurality of primary plates;
• a pulse tube refrigerator connected to a first subset of the plurality of primary plates;
• a demountable secondary insert comprising a plurality of secondary plates, each secondary plate having a secondary contact surface;
• and
• a dilution unit thermally coupled to one or more of the secondary contact surfaces;
• wherein the secondary plates are mounted to a second subset of the plurality of primary plates, and wherein each secondary plate of the plurality of secondary plates is mounted to a respective primary plate of the second subset of the plurality of primary plates by a conductive thermal contact provided by area contact between conformal planar regions of the respective primary contact surface and secondary contact surface;
• wherein the secondary insert is removable from the primary insert;
• and
• wherein removing the secondary insert from the primary insert thermally decouples the dilution unit from the second subset of the plurality of primary plates.
