Intelligent automatic start/stop for vehicle engines

A vehicle comprising:

• a sensor;
• an internal combustion engine;
• and
• a processing system comprising:
• a memory comprising computer readable instructions;
• and
• a processing device for executing the computer readable instructions, the computer readable instructions controlling the processing system to perform operations for intelligent automatic start/stop for vehicle engines, the operations comprising:
• receiving data from the sensor;
• performing a perception task based at least in part on the data received from the sensor of the vehicle;
• determining whether the internal combustion engine of the vehicle is stopped or started;
• responsive to determining that the internal combustion engine of the vehicle is started, determining whether to stop the internal combustion engine based at least in part on the perception task;
• and
• responsive to determining to stop the internal combustion engine, stopping the internal combustion engine.

A computer program product comprising:

• a set of one or more computer-readable storage media;
• program instructions, collectively stored in the set of one or more computer-readable storage media, for causing a processor set to perform computer operations for intelligent automatic start/stop for vehicle engines, the computer operations comprising:
• receiving data from a sensor of a vehicle;
• performing a perception task based at least in part on the data received from the sensor of the vehicle;
• determining whether an internal combustion engine of the vehicle is stopped or started;
• responsive to determining that the internal combustion engine of the vehicle is stopped, determining whether to start the internal combustion engine based at least in part on the perception task;
• responsive to determining to start the internal combustion engine, starting the internal combustion engine;
• responsive to determining that the internal combustion engine of the vehicle is started, determining whether to stop the internal combustion engine based at least in part on the perception task;
• and
• responsive to determining to stop the internal combustion engine, stopping the internal combustion engine.
