To ensure combustion stability even when a large amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) gas is recirculated into a cylinder, a spark ignition engine includes a first ignition plug and a second ignition plug, each of which is attached to an engine body and forcibly ignites an air-fuel mixture in a cylinder during a compression stroke or an expansion stroke. The first ignition plug and the second ignition plug are spaced apart in a predetermined direction. With ascent of a piston during the compression stroke, in the cylinder around compression top dead center, two vortex flows of the air-fuel mixture are formed in alignment in the predetermined direction with a center of the cylinder being interposed therebetween and in opposite directions from each other. The first ignition plug and the second ignition plug forcibly ignite the air-fuel mixture at a timing around the compression top dead center.
