Abstract
A method may include drilling a portion of a borehole with a bottomhole assembly (BHA) including the downhole tool in an automated drilling routine. A method may include receiving, at a control unit of the BHA, a disengagement downlink communication having a disengagement magnitude and disengagement duration. A method may include, based at least partially on the disengagement downlink communication, disengaging the automated drilling routine.
Claims19
A method of controlling a downhole tool while drilling, the method comprising:
- drilling a portion of a borehole with a bottomhole assembly (BHA) including the downhole tool in an active automated drilling routine;
- at a control unit of the BHA, receiving a first downlink communication that instructs the control unit to disengage the active automated drilling routine, wherein the first downlink communication comprises i) a single rotations-per-minute (RPM) pulse defined by a predetermined RPM for a predetermined time duration or ii) a single mud pulse defined by a predetermined mud pressure for a predetermined time duration;
- and
- at the control unit of the BHA, based at least partially on the control unit receiving the first downlink communication, controlling the downhole tool to disengage the active automated drilling routine.
1 more element
A downhole system comprising:
- a directional steering tool;
- and
- a control unit including a processor, wherein the control unit is operably coupled to the directional steering tool and adapted to:
- receive a downlink communication that instructs the control unit to disengage an active automated drilling routine of the directional steering tool, wherein the downlink communication comprises i) a single rotations-per-minute (RPM) pulse defined by a predetermined RPM for a predetermined time duration or ii) a single mud pulse defined by a predetermined mud pressure for a predetermined time duration, and
- based at least partially on receiving the downlink communication, control the directional steering tool to disengage the active automated drilling routine.
