Abstract
A Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system and method generates electricity by applying a supercritical fluid to an expansion turbine connected to a generator. The CCS system selects a first sequestration reservoir from one or more sequestration reservoirs in a reservoir formation, each sequestration reservoir including a supercritical fluid. The CCS system extracts the supercritical fluid from the selected first sequestration reservoir, separating brine from the supercritical fluid with an inflow control device. The CCS system generated electricity by applying the extracted supercritical fluid to the expansion turbine and then compresses the expanded supercritical fluid into a desired supercritical state.
Claims20
A method of generating electricity, comprising:
- selecting a first sequestration reservoir from one or more sequestration reservoirs in a reservoir formation, each sequestration reservoir including a supercritical fluid;
- extracting the supercritical fluid from the first sequestration reservoir, wherein extracting includes separating brine from the supercritical fluid with an inflow control device;
- generating the electricity by applying the supercritical fluid that is extracted to an expansion turbine connected to a generator, wherein generating includes outputting the supercritical fluid from the expansion turbine after expansion;
- and
- compressing the supercritical fluid that is expanded into a desired supercritical state.
A carbon capture and storage system, comprising:
- a plurality of sets of reservoir injection equipment, each set of the reservoir injection equipment including an isolation valve, each set of the plurality of sets of the reservoir injection equipment configured to connect through a borehole to a respective sequestration reservoir of one or more sequestration reservoirs in a reservoir formation;
- power generation equipment having an expansion turbine connected to a generator, the power generation equipment connected to one or more of the plurality of sets of the reservoir injection equipment, the power generation equipment configured to receive supercritical fluid;
- a compressor connected to a motor and to the expansion turbine;
- and
- a computer system having a processor and a memory, the memory including instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
- select a first sequestration reservoir from the one or more sequestration reservoirs in the reservoir formation, each sequestration reservoir including a supercritical fluid;
- extract the supercritical fluid from the first sequestration reservoir, wherein the instructions to cause the processor to extract includes instructions to cause the processor to separate brine from the supercritical fluid with an inflow control device;
- generate electricity by applying the supercritical fluid that is extracted to the expansion turbine, wherein the instructions to cause the processor to generate includes instructions to cause the processor to output the supercritical fluid from the expansion turbine after expansion of the supercritical fluid;
- and
- compress the supercritical fluid that is expanded into a desired supercritical state.
A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer cause the computer to:
- select a first sequestration reservoir from one or more sequestration reservoirs in a reservoir formation, each sequestration reservoir including a supercritical fluid;
- extract the supercritical fluid from the first sequestration reservoir, wherein the instructions that cause the computer to extract includes instructions that cause the computer to separate brine from the supercritical fluid with an inflow control device;
- generate electricity by applying the supercritical fluid that is extracted to an expansion turbine connected to a generator, wherein the instructions that cause the computer to generate the electricity includes instructions that cause the computer to output the supercritical fluid from the expansion turbine after expansion;
- and
- compress the supercritical fluid that is expanded into a desired supercritical state.
