Orientation tools for tubing hangers

An orientation tool for adjusting an angular orientation of a component in a wellhead system, the orientation tool comprising:

• an outer housing;
• an inner mandrel received in the outer housing, where the inner mandrel is configured to be coupled to the component;
• an angular adjustment assembly coupled between the outer housing and the inner mandrel, where the angular adjustment assembly comprises a piston, and where actuation of the piston is configured to rotate the inner mandrel;
• and
• a control module coupled to the inner mandrel, where the control module comprises one or more sensors and a valve assembly, and where the control module is configured to:
• determine the angular orientation of the inner mandrel by use of the one or more sensors;
• and
• actuate the valve assembly to actuate the piston and rotate the inner mandrel based on the angular orientation.

A method of landing a tubing hanger in a wellhead, the method comprising:

• (a) lowering a landing assembly through a blowout preventer (BOP) to position the tubing hanger in the wellhead;
• (b) positioning an orientation tool of the landing assembly in a bore of the BOP during (a);
• (c) locking an outer housing of the orientation tool to the bore of the BOP, where the orientation tool comprises an inner mandrel positioned in the outer housing;
• (d) actuating a piston of the orientation tool to rotate the inner mandrel relative to the outer housing;
• and
• (e) rotating the tubing hanger as a result of (d).
