Abstract
A light frame construction building and a method for constructing such a building employ tie rods configured to act in series to resist overturning forces, such as experienced in seismic or high wind conditions. The tie rods are secured to different stories of the building so that they resist only dedicated parts of the total load from the overturning force.
Claims20
A light frame construction building comprising:
- a foundation;
- frame walls arranged above the foundation to enclose an interior of the building on sides of the building;
- a first story of the building including a first set of the frame walls;
- a second story of the building including a second set of the frame walls and a second story floor;
- a first metal rod anchored in the foundation and extending through a first frame wall of the first set of frame walls and into the second story, the first metal rod being free of structural connection to the first story;
- a second metal rod anchored in the foundation and extending through the first frame wall of the first set of frame walls and into the second story;
- a second story connector connecting the second metal rod being structurally connected to the first story.
4 more elements
A method of building a light frame construction building comprising:
- forming a foundation;
- anchoring a first metal rod at a first lower end to the foundation;
- anchoring a second metal rod at a second lower end to the foundation;
- constructing a first story of the building with a first plurality of frame walls;
- constructing a second story of the building with a second plurality of frame walls and a second story floor, the second plurality of frame walls and second story floor being above the first story of the building, the first metal rod extending through the second story floor and being free of structural connection to the first story;
- and
- structurally connecting the second metal rod to the first story.
4 more elements
A light frame construction building comprising:
- a foundation;
- plural stories, each story including a set of frame walls and a floor;
- a first metal rod anchored in the foundation and structurally connected to at least one of the plural stories;
- a second metal rod anchored in the foundation and structurally connected to at least one of the stories;
- wherein the first and second metal rods act in series to resist lateral overturning forces.
