Contagion-based flood propagation models using multilayer networks

A system comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a computer-readable medium storing instructions operative by the processor to:
• generate a flood contagion model using transportation system data corresponding to a transportation system of a defined area and stormwater system data corresponding to a stormwater system of the defined area, the flood contagion model including a multilayer network including:
• a transportation system layer based on the transportation system data and comprising a plurality of first nodes;
• and
• a stormwater system layer based on the stormwater system data and comprising a plurality of second nodes,
• wherein the transportation system layer and the stormwater system layer are interconnected based on connections made between the plurality of first nodes and the plurality of second nodes, the connections thereby forming a network of nodes;
• generate time series water depth data by applying a hydrologic model to the defined area;
• calibrate the flood contagion model using the time series water depth data;
• simulate a flooding scenario using simulated rainfall data using the calibrated flood contagion model to thereby determine locations of flooding in the multilayer network during the flooding scenario;
• and
• display results of the simulation of the flooding scenario on a user device.

A computer-readable medium storing instructions operative upon execution by a processor to:

• generate a flood contagion model using transportation system data corresponding to a transportation system of a defined area and stormwater system data corresponding to a stormwater system of the defined area, the flood contagion model including a multilayer network including:
• a transportation system layer based on the transportation system data and comprising a plurality of first nodes;
• and
• a stormwater system layer based on the stormwater system data and comprising a plurality of second nodes,
• wherein the transportation system layer and the stormwater system layer are interconnected based on connections made between the plurality of first nodes and the plurality of second nodes, the connections thereby forming a network of nodes;
• generate time series water depth data by applying a hydrologic model to the defined area;
• calibrate the flood contagion model using the time series water depth data;
• simulate a flooding scenario using simulated rainfall data using the calibrated flood contagion model to thereby determine locations of flooding in the multilayer network during the flooding scenario;
• and
• display results of the simulation of the flooding scenario on a user device.
