System and method of operating household appliances

A system for operating a group of household appliances connected to a wireless network, the system comprising:

• a remote computing device;
• the group of household appliances, the group of household appliances comprising:
• a first household appliance, the first household appliance including a local user interface and a first controller operatively coupled to the local user interface and the remote computing device;
• and
• a second household appliance, the second household appliance including a second controller operatively coupled to the remote computing device;
• and
• a controller, the controller configured to:
• capture data of channel characteristics of a first wireless channel of a plurality of wireless channels in response to a generated input indicative of physical contact by a user with the local user interface of the first household appliance, the captured data indicative of a presence of the user at the first household appliance;
• determine that a pattern of the captured data is associated with a presence of the user;
• detect the pattern with the second household appliance;
• and
• determine that the user is present at the second household appliance based on the detected pattern.
