An electrochemical system produces a gas from an aqueous solution. A liquid is circulated from a half-cell to a reaction vessel and then returned to the half-cell. A redox mediator in the liquid is converted from a first state to a second state in the half-cell and reacts to form a gas in the reaction chamber while being returned to its first state. The circulating liquid also includes a high molecular weight linear polymer or a viscoelastic surfactant which forms wormlike micelles enabling it to be in a state of elastic turbulence and the reaction chamber is configured to compel changes of flow direction so that the liquid is in a state of elastic turbulence as it flows through the reaction chamber. The half-cell may be configured such that the liquid is in a state of elastic turbulence as it flows through the half-cell.
