Abstract
A complex refractory material includes at least four or more elements that have at least one miscibility gap, a spinodal microstructure, and a boride layer. The at least four or more elements comprise niobium, tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, zirconium, chromium, vanadium, titanium, rhenium, iron, hafnium, and manganese. The at least four or more elements can undergo spinodal decomposition. The complex refractory material can undergo surface hardening by an ultrafast boriding process. The complex refractory material can have high hardness and toughness.
Claims20
A material, comprising:
- at least four or more different elements, wherein at least one pair of the at least four or more different elements has at least one miscibility gap;
- and
- a spinodal microstructure.
A method for synthesizing, fabricating, and surface hardening a material, comprising:
- synthesizing, at least four or more different elements, wherein at least one pair of the at least four or more different elements has at least one miscibility gap and a spinodal microstructure;
- and
- consolidating, the at least four or more different elements.
