Abstract
The invention relates to methods of producing lignin epoxide adduct with thermoplastic properties. In particular the invention describes a method which can be performed under mild conditions, to obtain a lignin epoxide adduct with a low percentage of homopolymer of epoxide. The invention further relates to compositions and lignin epoxide adduct obtained using the described method.
Claims15
A method for producing a composition comprising Lignin epoxide adduct (EpL) with thermoplastic properties, the method comprising the following:
- (i) contacting a lignin dispersion with an epoxide to obtain a composition comprising EpL, wherein the lignin dispersion comprises lignin and at least one dispersant, wherein lignin is characterized by an average molecular weight Mw below 2 kDa and a polydispersity index between 1 and 2.
A lignin epoxide adduct (EpL) with thermoplastic properties, wherein more than 90% of the epoxide units covalently attached to lignin by the epoxide addition reaction are monomeric ether moieties derived from the epoxide.
