A method of forming a graphene film based on chemical vapor deposition includes heating a metal substrate located in a first heating zone of a CVD reactor so as to enable graphene growth on the metal substrate and heating a solid biomass-derived carbon source comprising volatilizable carbon-containing species located in a second heating zone of the CVD reactor so as to volatilize the carbon-containing species from the solid biomass-derived carbon source. The second heating zone is upstream of and spatially separated from the first heating zone. The method further includes providing a flow of carrier gas from the second heating zone to the first heating zone to facilitate transport of the volatilized carbon-containing species to the metal substrate, thereby enabling formation of a graphene film on the metal substrate. At least part of the heating of the metal substrate, at least part of the heating of the solid biomass-derived carbon source, and at least part of the providing of the flow of carrier gas are performed simultaneously.
