An electric cracking system for on-board ammonia cracking includes an electric cracking unit having an inlet configured to receive ammonia and an outlet coupled to an injection system for an internal combustion engine. A heating element is disposed within the electric cracking unit and is energized by electric current supplied from a power supply to heat the electric cracking unit to a threshold temperature suitable to perform an endothermic ammonia cracking process. The ammonia received by the electric cracking unit is cracked into a hydrogen gas mixture that exits the electric cracking unit and flows to the injection system. The power supply is configured to supply electric current to the electric cracking unit and may be charged by an alternator, a motor-generator configured to recover energy during regenerative braking, or another energy harvesting mechanism.
