Abstract
This disclosure relates generally to roll stabilization and related apparatuses.
Claims25
A roll-stabilizer apparatus for a marine vessel comprising:
- a flywheel mounted for rotation around a rotation axis;
- an electric motor operable to:
- apply a driving torque to the flywheel in a driving direction around the rotation axis to rotate the flywheel around the rotation axis, the electric motor having a power draw associated with application of the driving torque;
- and
- apply a resistive torque to the flywheel in a resistive direction around the rotation axis to dampen rotation of the flywheel around the rotation axis and thereby generate electrical energy;
- a control system configured to:
- determine a flywheel rotation condition corresponding to a desired power draw;
- and
- cause the electric motor to apply a torque to the flywheel to rotate the flywheel at the flywheel rotation condition;
- and
- a mounting body supporting the flywheel on a hull of the marine vessel.

A marine vessel comprising:
- at least one hull;
- a roll-stabilizer apparatus comprising:
- a flywheel mounted for rotation around a rotation axis;
- an electric motor operable to:
- apply a driving torque to the flywheel in a driving direction around the rotation axis to rotate the flywheel around the rotation axis, the electric motor having a power draw associated with application of the driving torque;
- and
- apply a resistive torque to the flywheel in a resistive direction around the rotation axis to dampen rotation of the flywheel around the rotation axis and thereby generate electrical energy;
- a control system configured to:
- determine a flywheel rotation condition corresponding to a desired power draw;
- and
- cause the electric motor to apply a torque to the flywheel to rotate the flywheel at the flywheel rotation condition;
- and
- a mounting body supporting the flywheel on the hull.

A method of dampening rotation of a flywheel of a roll-stabilizer apparatus for a marine vessel, the method comprising:
- accelerating rotation of the flywheel around a rotation axis with an electric motor of the roll-stabilizer apparatus, wherein the electric motor has a power draw;
- determining a flywheel rotation condition corresponding to a desired power draw;
- and
- causing the electric motor of the roll-stabilizer apparatus to apply a resistive torque to the flywheel to rotate the flywheel around a rotation axis at the flywheel rotation condition, to thereby generate electrical energy.
