Abstract
An intersection management system and method for reducing or avoiding potential collisions between vehicles are provided. The system may use a wireless signal, with or without a circuit, to traverse an intersection. The system may use, at least in part, a positive vehicle control system.
Claims22
A system, comprising:
- a controller onboard a vehicle, the vehicle configured to travel along a route toward an intersection that includes a crossing system, the controller configured to:
- direct an onboard communication device to attempt establishment of a wireless communication connection with a wayside communication device associated with the crossing system as the vehicle approaches the intersection;
- in response to successfully establishing the wireless communication connection, exchange data between the onboard communication device and the wayside communication device;
- and
- in response to failing to establish the wireless communication connection, both re-attempt establishment of the wireless communication connection, and decelerate the vehicle before reaching the intersection.
2 more elements
A system, comprising:
- a controller configured to:
- receive, directly or indirectly, wireless data associated with a vehicle on a route approaching an intersection;
- receive circuit-derived data from a conductive track circuit on the route, the circuit-derived data triggered by the vehicle entering a portion of the route conductively circuited by the conductive track circuit;
- and
- control a crossing system at the intersection based at least in part on both of the wireless data associated with the vehicle and of the circuit-derived data.
2 more elements
The method of claim 20, comprising:
- determining that the wireless position data and the circuit-derived data are mutually consistent;
- and
- selecting the response based on the circuit-derived data as supplemental confirmatory data augmenting the wireless position data.
The method of claim 20, further comprising:
- determining that the wireless data and the circuit-derived data are not mutually consistent;
- and
- selecting the response based on the wireless data alone, the circuit-derived data alone, or a weighted combination of the wireless data and the circuit-derived data.
