Abstract
A card reading system in which electrical contacts between the assay card and the card reader are made through vertical actuation of a card interface relative to the assay card. In one embodiment, the assay card reading system comprises: (a) a card reader comprising at least one card interface, the card interface having a plurality of card interface contacts; (b) an assay card having card contacts; (c) a vertical actuation mechanism for causing relative vertical movement between the assay card and the card interface to contact at least a portion of the card interface contacts with the card contacts.

An assay card reading system comprising:
- an assay card having a top side, a bottom side, and one or more edges, and comprising at least,
- one or more first alignment fiducials on at least one of said edges;
- one or more second alignment fiducials on said top side or said bottom side;
- and
- a card reader comprising at least,
- a card bay for receiving an assay card;
- one or more first fiducial cooperating members along at least one side of said card bay to engage said first fiducials and provide initial alignment of said assay card in said card bay;
- and
- at least one card interface above and/or below said card bay, said card interface comprising one or more second fiducial cooperating members, and said card interface having at least two states, a first state in which said card interface is distal from said card bay allowing an assay card to be received in said card bay, and a second state in which said second fiducial cooperating members engage said second fiducials on said assay card, to provide final alignment of said assay card relative to said card interface.
An assay card reading system comprising:
- an assay card having sides and at least one first component of an interengagement mechanism along one of said sides;
- a card reader comprising at least,
- a card bay for receiving an assay card;
- a second component of said interengagement mechanism for interengaging with said first component to hold said assay card in a predetermined position within said card bay, wherein said assay card is positioned in said predetermined position by said interengagement mechanism and not by a register surface.
