Intravascular blood pump having expandable distal segment

An intravascular pump assembly, comprising:

• an elongate body having a distal end and a proximal end;
• and
• a pump housing disposed at the distal end of the elongate body, wherein the pump housing has a blood inlet and a blood outlet and comprising:
• (a) an expandable coil comprising successive helical turns disposed along a longitudinal axis of the expandable coil, wherein the expandable coil comprises undulating bends and struts, wherein the successive helical turns have a gap therebetween, wherein the successive turns are inclined at an acute pitch angle in a range from 85° to 89.9° relative to the longitudinal axis;
• and
• (b) a membrane secured to the expandable coil;
• wherein the expandable coil is configured to be radially expanded from a delivery configuration to support the pump housing in a deployed configuration having an axial blood flow passage therethrough;
• and
• (c) a rotatable impeller configured to be disposed in the axial blood flow passage to induce axial flow of fluid from the blood inlet to the blood outlet when the pump housing is deployed.

An intravascular pump assembly comprising:

• an elongate body having a distal end and a proximal end;
• and
• a pump housing disposed at the distal end of the elongate body, wherein the pump housing has a blood inlet and a blood outlet and comprising:
• (a) a plurality of radially expandable circumferential rings arranged along a longitudinal axis with circumferential gaps therebetween, wherein at least some of the radially expandable circumferential rings comprise serpentine or zig-zag structures comprising struts joined by crowns;
• and
• (b) a plurality of supporting elements, each supporting element having a base end and a free end, wherein the base end is attached to one of the plurality of radially expandable circumferential rings and the free end extends axially, circumferentially, or both away from the one of the plurality of radially expandable circumferential rings, wherein the base end is attached to an inner side of a crown and the free end is disposed between adjacent struts attached to the crown;
• (c) a membrane secured to the plurality of radially expandable circumferential rings;
• wherein the plurality of radially expandable circumferential rings is configured to be radially expanded from a delivery configuration to support the pump housing in a deployed configuration having an axial blood flow passage therethrough;
• and
• (d) a rotatable impeller configured to be disposed in the axial blood flow passage to induce axial flow of fluid from the blood inlet to the blood outlet when the pump housing is deployed.
