Abstract
An implant can be configured to transition between a first stable state and a second stable state. The implant can include a first surface and a second surface coupled to the first surface. The first surface can include a first structure configured to form a stable planar shape during the first stable state of the implant and to form a stable three-dimensional (“3D”) shape during the second stable state of the implant. The second surface can include a second structure configured to form a stable planar shape during the first stable state of the implant and to form a stable 3D shape during the second stable state of the implant.
Claims19
A method of inserting an implant within a patient comprising:
- providing an implant having first and second structures, each structure being in a bi-stable auxetic form and having a first bi-stable state defining an unexpanded state and a second bi-stable state defining an expanded state;
- positioning, into the patient, the implant while the implant is in the first bi-stable state;
- and
- transitioning the positioned implant from the first bi-stable state to the second bi-stable state by actuating an inflator positioned between the first and second structures.
A method of inserting an implant within a patient comprising:
- providing an implant having first and second structures, each structure being in a bi-stable auxetic form and having a first bi-stable state defining an unexpanded state and a second bi-stable state defining an expanded state, the implant being in a compacted version of the first bi-stable state;
- positioning, into the patient, the provided implant while the implant is in the compacted version of the first bi-stable state such that the positioned implant self-deploy into a decompacted version of the first bi-stable state;
- and
- transitioning the positioned implant from the first bi-stable state to the second bi-stable state by actuating an inflator positioned between the first and second structures.
