Abstract
A system and computer-implemented method for manufacturing an orthopedic implant involves segmenting features in an image of anatomy. Anatomic elements can be isolated. Spatial relationships between the isolated anatomic elements can be manipulated. Negative space between anatomic elements is mapped before and/or after manipulating the spatial relationships. At least a portion of the negative space can be filled with a virtual implant. The virtual implant can be used to design and manufacture a physical implant.
Claims29
A method comprising:
- receiving a plurality of two-dimensional images of a patient;
- generating, using a computer system, a virtual three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of a spine of the patient in the plurality of two-dimensional images, wherein the virtual three-dimensional model includes a first vertebral endplate with a first surface topography and a second vertebral endplate with a second surface topography;
- designing an interbody implant to be positioned between a first vertebra and a second vertebra of the spine based on the virtual three-dimensional model, wherein the first vertebra includes the first vertebral endplate and the second vertebra includes the second vertebral endplate, and wherein the interbody implant includes:
- a first region configured to match the first surface topography of the first vertebral endplate,
- a second region configured to match the second surface topography of the second vertebral endplate, and
- a dimension for spacing apart the first vertebra and the second vertebra to achieve an anatomical correction when the interbody implant is positioned between the first vertebra and the second vertebra;
- and
- causing display of at least one of (a) a portion of the virtual three-dimensional model representing the anatomical correction and one or more metrics associated with the anatomical correction or (b) a virtual representation of the interbody implant.
A system, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- one or more memories storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to perform operations comprising
- receiving a plurality of two-dimensional images of a patient;
- generating, using a computer system, a virtual three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of a spine of the patient in the plurality of two-dimensional images, wherein the virtual three-dimensional model includes a first vertebral endplate with a first surface topography and a second vertebral endplate with a second surface topography;
- designing an interbody implant to be positioned between a first vertebra and a second vertebra of the spine based on the virtual three-dimensional model, wherein the first vertebra includes the first vertebral endplate and the second vertebra includes the second vertebral endplate, and wherein the interbody implant includes:
- a first region configured to match the first surface topography of the first vertebral endplate,
- a second region configured to match the second surface topography of the second vertebral endplate, and
- a dimension for spacing apart the first vertebra and the second vertebra to achieve an anatomical correction when the interbody implant is positioned between the first vertebra and the second vertebra;
- and
- causing display of at least one of (a) a portion of the virtual three-dimensional model representing the anatomical correction and one or more metrics associated with the anatomical correction or (b) a virtual representation of the interbody implant.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:
- generating, using a computer system, a virtual three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of a spine of a patient in the plurality of two-dimensional images, wherein the virtual three-dimensional model includes a first vertebral endplate with a first surface topography and a second vertebral endplate with a second surface topography;
- designing an interbody implant to be positioned between a first vertebra and a second vertebra of the spine based on the virtual three-dimensional model, wherein the first vertebra includes the first vertebral endplate and the second vertebra includes the second vertebral endplate, and wherein the interbody implant includes:
- a first region configured to match the first surface topography of the first vertebral endplate,
- a second region configured to match the second surface topography of the second vertebral endplate, and
- a dimension for spacing apart the first vertebra and the second vertebra to achieve an anatomical correction when the interbody implant is positioned between the first vertebra and the second vertebra;
- and
- causing display of at least one of (a) a portion of the virtual three-dimensional model representing the anatomical correction and one or more metrics associated with the anatomical correction or (b) a virtual representation of the interbody implant.
A method of manufacturing a three-dimensional spine implant to achieve a correction for a deformed spine of a patient based on plurality of two-dimensional pre-operative images of the deformed spine, the method comprising:
- obtaining the plurality of two-dimensional pre-operative images of the deformed spine;
- determining two-dimensional anatomical feature data in the plurality of two-dimensional pre-operative images;
- constructing, using a computer system, a virtual three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the deformed spine in the plurality two-dimensional images based on the two-dimensional anatomical feature data, wherein the virtual three-dimensional model includes a three-dimensional virtual first vertebral endplate with surface topography and a three-dimensional virtual second vertebral endplate with surface topography;
- designing an interbody implant to be positioned between a first vertebra and a second vertebra of the spine to achieve the correction for the deformed spine, wherein the first vertebra includes the first vertebral endplate and the second vertebra includes the second vertebral endplate, and wherein the interbody implant includes:
- a first region configured to match the surface topography of the first vertebral endplate,
