A surgical navigation system has an annotation function for inputting medical annotations and outputting medical annotations superimposed on visual images during a surgical procedure. The system includes a display for displaying medical annotations and a robot with a stereoscopic recording system for 3D recording of a structure or surface. A tracking system detects and tracks the position of the recording system and provides the position in computer-readable form. An annotation system has a storage unit that stores an annotation database with a global coordinate system for annotation objects. A control unit processes the 3D recording, determines a position of the 3D recording in the global coordinate system, and outputs an annotation object of the annotation database in the 3D recording via the display device in a superimposed display. The system can be used in a navigation method that is executable with instructions stored in a computer-readable storage medium.
