Abstract

Systems and methods for designing and implementing patient-specific surgical procedures and/or medical devices are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method includes receiving a patient data set of a patient. The patient data set is compared to a plurality of reference patient data sets, wherein each of the plurality of reference patient data sets is associated with a corresponding reference patient. A subset of the plurality of reference patient data sets is selected based, at least partly, on similarity to the patient data set and treatment outcome of the corresponding reference patient. Based on the selected subset, at least one surgical procedure or medical device design for treating the patient is generated.

Dependent claims

A system for providing patient-specific spinal surgery, the system comprising:

a surgical robot including one or more articulatable arms having one or more end effectors configured to hold one or more surgical instruments;
and
a computer module having at least one processor and a memory, wherein the memory includes machine-readable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computer module to perform operations comprising:
analyzing a patient-specific surgical plan for implanting a patient-specific implant along or within a spine of a patient to achieve a preplanned anatomical correction to the spine to determine whether the surgical robot is capable of performing one or more surgical steps for implanting the patient-specific implant according to the patient-specific surgical plan;
and
in response to determining that the surgical robot is capable of performing the one or more surgical steps, generating operative instructions for controlling the surgical robot to perform the one or more surgical steps using the one or more articulatable arms, the one or more end effectors, and/or the one or more surgical instruments.

A computer-implemented method for providing patient-specific spinal surgery using a robotic surgical platform, the method comprising:

analyzing a patient-specific surgical plan for implanting a patient-specific implant along or within a spine of a patient to achieve a preplanned anatomical correction to the spine to determine whether a surgical robot of the robotic surgical platform is capable of performing one or more surgical steps for implanting the patient-specific implant according to the patient-specific surgical plan, wherein the surgical robot includes one or more articulatable arms having one or more end effectors configured to hold one or more surgical instruments and/or the patient-specific implant;
and
in response to determining that the surgical robot is capable of performing the one or more surgical steps, generating operative instructions that, when executed by the robotic surgical platform, cause the robotic surgical platform to perform the one or more surgical steps using the one or more articulatable arms, the one or more end effectors, and/or the one or more surgical instruments.

A method for providing patient-specific spinal surgery using a surgical robot, the method comprising:

accessing a patient-specific surgical plan for implanting a patient-specific implant along or within a spine of a patient to achieve a preplanned anatomical correction to a spine of the patient, wherein the patient-specific implant is an intervertebral cage having a patient-specific topography designed to mate with a corresponding endplate topography of the patient;
and
using the surgical robot to perform one or more steps for implanting the patient-specific implant according to the patient-specific surgical plan, wherein the surgical robot includes one or more articulatable arms with one or more end effectors configured to hold one or more surgical instruments and/or the patient-specific implant, and wherein the one or more steps include implanting the patient-specific implant at the target site using the one or more articulatable arms, the one or more end effectors, and/or the one or more surgical instruments, such that the patient-specific topography of the intervertebral cage mates with the corresponding endplate topography.

A robotic surgical platform for performing patient-specific spinal surgery, the robotic surgical platform comprising:

a surgical robot including:
one or more articulatable arms, and
one or more end effectors associated with the one or more articulatable arms and configured to hold one or more surgical instruments;
and
a control module having at least one processor and a memory, wherein the memory includes machine-readable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the control module to perform operations comprising:
accessing a patient-specific surgical plan for implanting a patient-specific implant along or within a spine of a patient to achieve a preplanned anatomical correction to a spine of the patient, wherein the patient-specific implant is an intervertebral cage having a patient-specific topography designed to mate with a corresponding endplate topography of the patient at a target site;
and
controlling the surgical robot to implant the patient-specific implant at the target site using the one or more articulatable arms, the one or more end effectors, and/or the one or more surgical instruments, such that the patient-specific topography of the intervertebral cage mates with the corresponding endplate topography.
