Abstract
Devices, kits, and methods described herein are usable for medical treatments by generating local maxima using constructive interference of multiple oscillator outputs. Where constructive interference occurs between the oscillator waves, the output signal can have significant strength to cause heating and coagulation at a bleeding vessel, for instance, while at areas with little interaction (or with destructive interference) there is insufficient power dissipated by the output signal to cause heating sufficient to cause coagulating heating.

A system comprising:
- a plurality of signal generators including at least first and second signal generators, the first signal generator configured to generate a first oscillating electromagnetic signal, the second signal generator configured to generate a second oscillating electromagnetic signal;
- a processor configured to drive the plurality of signal generators such that the first oscillating electromagnetic signal has a different phase or frequency from the second oscillating electromagnetic signal;
- a combiner arranged to receive at least the first oscillating electromagnetic signal and the second oscillating electromagnetic signal, the combiner configured to generate a summed signal based on at least the received first and second oscillating electromagnetic signals;
- an amplifier arranged to receive the summed signal and configured to, based on at least the summed signal, generate an output signal;
- a directional antenna configured to emit the output signal, the output signal configured to provide a treatment effect to tissue of a patient;
- and
- a forward-sense circuit configured to detect forward power, the system configured to define a depth of the treatment effect within the patient based on at least detected forward power,
- wherein at least one of the frequency and phase of at least one of the oscillating electromagnetic signals is adjustable such that the depth of the treatment effect of the output signal is sufficient to treat a targeted treatment site within the patient.
A method for treating a target, the method comprising:
- operating a first signal generator to generate a first oscillating electromagnetic signal having a first frequency, a first phase, and a first amplitude;
- operating a second signal generator to generate a second oscillating electromagnetic signal having a second frequency, a second phase, and a second amplitude;
- combining and amplifying at least the first and second oscillating electromagnetic signals to generate an output signal;
- emitting the output signal from a directional antenna, the output signal configured to provide a treatment effect to tissue of a patient;
- sensing forward power with a forward-sense circuit;
- and
- defining a depth of the treatment effect within the patient based on at least detected forward power,
- wherein the first oscillating electromagnetic signal has a different phase or frequency from the second oscillating electromagnetic signal, and the first oscillating electromagnetic signal and the second oscillating electromagnetic signal are at least one of selected and adjusted such that the depth of the treatment effect of the output signal is sufficient to treat a targeted treatment site within the patient.
A kit comprising:
- a device including:
- plurality of signal generators;
- a processor configured to drive the signal generators such that at least one of the plurality of signal generators generates a first oscillating electromagnetic signal having a different phase or frequency from a second oscillating electromagnetic signal generated by another of the plurality of signal generators;
- a combiner arranged to receive the first electromagnetic signal and the second electromagnetic signal to generate a summed signal, wherein the summed signal includes at least the first electromagnetic signal and the second electromagnetic signal such that the first electromagnetic signal and the second electromagnetic signal alternatingly constructively and destructively interfere;
- an amplifier arranged to receive the summed signal and configured to generate an output signal;
- a directional antenna configured to emit the output signal, the output signal configured to provide a treatment effect to tissue of a patient;
