Abstract
According to one embodiment, a method includes positioning a portion of a trocar into a patient cavity and inserting a surgical instrument into the trocar. The method also includes measuring, by a pressure sensor disposed in, on, or through a medical appliance, a pressure indicative of a pressure in the patient cavity. The method also includes supplying, based at least in part on the measured pressure, an insufflation gas to the patient cavity by providing the insufflation gas through the trocar.
Claims24
1-28. (canceled)
A surgical procedure, comprising:
- measuring, by a pressure sensor disposed in a trocar, a pressure indicative of a pressure in a patient cavity, wherein:
- at least a portion of the trocar is inserted into the patient cavity during the surgical procedure;
- the trocar comprises at least an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member, wherein the outer tubular member extends at least a length of the inner tubular member;
- and
- the pressure sensor is disposed within the inner tubular member such that the pressure sensor is not in a flow channel for insufflation gas into or out of the patient cavity;
- and
- supplying, based at least in part on the measured pressure, an insufflation gas to the patient cavity by providing the insufflation gas through the trocar.

A system comprising:
- a trocar comprising at least an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member, wherein:
- at least a portion of the trocar is configured to be inserted into a patient cavity during a surgical procedure;
- and
- the outer tubular member extends at least a length of the inner tubular member;
- a pressure sensor configured to measure a pressure indicative of a pressure in the patient cavity and disposed within the inner tubular member such that the pressure sensor is not in a flow channel for insufflation gas into or out of the patient cavity;
- and
- an insufflator operable to supply an insufflation gas to the patient cavity based at least in part on the measured pressure, wherein the insufflation gas is supplied to the patient cavity through the trocar.
4 more elements
A system comprising:
- a trocar comprising at least an inner tubular member, an outer tubular member, and a pressure sensor, wherein:
- the outer tubular member extends at least a length of the inner tubular member;
- the pressure sensor is disposed within the inner tubular member such that the pressure sensor is not in a flow channel for insufflation gas into or out of a patient cavity;
- and
- the pressure sensor is configured to measure a pressure indicative of a pressure in the patient cavity;
- and
- an insufflator comprising an electrical connection operable to receive one or more signals from the pressure sensor, wherein the insufflator is configured to regulate a flow of the insufflation gas to the patient cavity through the trocar based at least in part on the one or more signals from the pressure sensor.
