A device for extracting a fluid sample from a skin of a subject is disclosed. The device has at least one micro-needle having a tip portion, an end portion, and a passage. The tip portion is configured to be inserted into the subject's skin. The passage is configured to transport the fluid sample, extracted from the skin by the at least one micro-needle, away from the tip portion. The device also has a body that supports the at least one micro-needle and a storage unit arranged in the body. The storage unit is fluidically connected to the passage to collect and temporarily store the fluid sample transported by the passage. Additionally, a cutaneous force applicator applies a repeatable, controlled force to the skin tissue around the micro-needle to generate a controlled pressure on the skin tissue, to extract a fluid sample from the skin.
